The first thought that many have when they hear the word “Mother” is most likely about their own mother, the woman who gave birth to them, and raised them for almost, or even more than, 20 years.
For some, their mother was not the woman who gave birth to them, who for whatever reason could not or would not be there for the rest of their infancy, childhood and adolescence. Instead, it could have been a grandmother, aunt, step-mother, foster mother or another woman who stepped into the role and did the job.
For others, it was not even a woman, perhaps it was their father, grandfather, uncle, step-father, foster father or another man who raised the child or children alone.
Whoever it was, most likely that person gave to the child hugs, kisses, education and understanding. They laughed with them, put their pictures on the refrigerator or walls, cried with them and for them, gave them advice, taught them many things about life. However, some mothers did not do these things often enough or even at all.
But someone did…
I believe that a mother doesn’t even have to be someone you know. I am certain that YOU have been a mother many times in your life. You may not have even remembered these times, or realized what you were doing or even knew that someone saw, but you have surely been an example to someone, having done an act of kindness, of example, of nurturing, of teaching to someone.
I am of the opinion that any person who has a loving moment of interaction with any other living being on this earth, or even the earth itself, is being a mother. This can include, but is in no way limited to, having a conversation with a stranger, giving food to someone who needs it but has no way to obtain it, hugging an animal, picking up trash even when you didn’t drop it. I could go on for days, for there are so many things I am sure a Heavenly Mother would do, that we can also do.
So the only question I have now is: How will you be a mother from now on?
